Former First Lady Aisha Buhari has inaugurated the construction of a multi-billion naira Computer Science Complex at Al-Qalam University, Katsina, in a move aimed at strengthening technology education and empowering future generations of Nigerian students.
Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony on Sunday, Aisha Buhari announced that proceeds from the 600-page book, From Soldier to Statesman: The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, would be used to fund the ambitious project.
She described the proposed complex as a lasting tribute to the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, whose life, she said, was marked by discipline, integrity, patriotism and a steadfast commitment to national development.
According to her, the project goes beyond bricks and mortar, representing an investment in the future of young Nigerians who will require digital skills to thrive in a rapidly evolving global economy.
“Technology has become the language of modern civilisation,” she said. “Countries that invest in computing, artificial intelligence, cyber security, software engineering and digital innovation are the ones shaping the future.”
Aisha Buhari noted that the book, launched in December 2025, chronicles Muhammadu Buhari’s journey from military service to democratic leadership and reflects on his years of public service and enduring legacy.
She stressed that the most meaningful way to honour a leader is by creating opportunities that benefit generations to come.
“As we perform this groundbreaking today, let us remember that every great institution begins with a vision. Every great nation is built through education, and every lasting legacy is founded upon service to humanity,” she said.
“The greatest memorial we can build is not merely one of concrete and steel, but one that nurtures knowledge, character and opportunity for generations yet unborn.”
Speaking emotionally at the event, the former First Lady acknowledged the challenges she has faced but maintained her resolve to remain focused on her goals.
“Dirty water does not stop a plant from growing, so do not let negative thoughts stop your progress. I am that type of woman,” she remarked.
Earlier, the Vice-Chancellor of Al-Qalam University, Prof. Nasiru Musa Yauri, described the project as a major milestone that would significantly enhance the institution’s academic capacity and benefit the wider community.
He disclosed that the facility would include two lecture halls with seating capacity for 156 students each, a 200-seat auditorium, three computer laboratories equipped with 50 computers each, office spaces for 20 staff members, and other supporting facilities.
Yauri said the complex would expand opportunities for training in computer science, information technology, cyber security and software engineering, helping to prepare more Nigerian youths for careers in the digital economy.
He further revealed that the facility would be named after former President Muhammadu Buhari upon completion.
Also speaking at the ceremony, Katsina State Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, represented by Deputy Governor Faruk Lawal Jobe, praised Aisha Buhari for her commitment to educational development and her continued contribution to the advancement of learning in the state.
The project is expected to strengthen Al-Qalam University’s position as a centre for technology-driven education while serving as a lasting symbol of Buhari’s legacy through investment in knowledge and innovation.
