An investigation conducted by Katsina Times into the tax administration system in Katsina State has uncovered indications that some of the state's wealthy individuals and privately owned companies may not be paying taxes in accordance with the provisions of the law.
As part of the investigation, the newspaper reviewed tax-related documents concerning several companies and large commercial establishments engaged in high-revenue and highly profitable business activities across the state.
The findings suggest that some major businesses, believed to generate hundreds of millions of naira in annual profits, reportedly declare and pay taxes that appear disproportionately low compared to the scale of their operations.
The investigation also found that some large-scale farming and livestock enterprises, whose annual revenues are estimated to run into hundreds of millions of naira, are paying tax amounts that many observers consider inconsistent with the size and profitability of their businesses.
One particularly striking finding was that, in some instances, the annual tax deducted from a Grade Level 10 civil servant exceeds the amount allegedly paid by owners of some major hotels and large commercial enterprises operating in Katsina State.
The investigation further revealed that some well-established companies in Katsina, rather than fulfilling their tax obligations, have reportedly claimed financial losses to justify minimal or no tax payments.
According to the findings, if wealthy individuals, major businesses, companies, hotels, and other large enterprises in Katsina State paid taxes in full as required by law, the state's internally generated revenue would increase significantly, strengthening government finances.
The investigation also indicates that Katsina State appears to rank among the lowest-performing states within its peer group in terms of tax compliance by companies and high-net-worth individuals.
However, the investigation found that most government contractors do not evade tax payments, as the government deducts the applicable taxes directly from contract payments before releasing the remaining balance to them.
Katsina Times made efforts to obtain responses from the Katsina State Internal Revenue Service, as well as from some of the companies and individuals mentioned in the investigation, to provide clarification on the issues raised. As of the time this report was filed, no responses had been received.
The newspaper will continue to monitor developments and will publish any responses or additional information provided by the relevant authorities and affected parties.
