A Katsina resident, Jamilu Ibrahim Gyaza, has recounted to Katsina Times how his wife, Sa'adiyya Lawal Dan Salah, a 23-year-old woman from Funtua, allegedly attempted to kill him with a knife on the night of Monday, June 29, 2026.

The couple live in the Sabuwar Unguwa area, near Keyway School in Katsina metropolis.

Jamilu told the newspaper that they had been married for just over four months. According to him, shortly after the marriage, he began noticing certain behaviours from his wife that troubled him, prompting him to seize and eventually destroy her mobile phone.

He said that a few days before the incident, Sa'adiyya repeatedly asked him questions about his assets, including the value of his house, what he would leave behind if he died, his death benefits, and other property he owned.

According to him, because she did not have a phone, he would often allow her to use his phone to contact her relatives and friends. He said that on Sunday she noticed that a substantial amount of money had been transferred to his account, after which she began asking him for the PIN to his ATM card.

Jamilu further alleged that on the night of the incident, he noticed that his wife had prepared a large veil but did not suspect anything unusual. He said he was lying in his room when she entered and asked him to adjust his sleeping position in accordance with Islamic practice. After he complied and turned to face east, he was drifting between sleep and wakefulness when he suddenly felt a knife being plunged into his neck.

"I immediately screamed, and my children heard my cries and rushed into the room. Despite that, she continued trying to stab me. When she realized that I had not died and that people had arrived, she dropped the knife, knelt down crying, and begged for forgiveness, saying she did not know what she was doing and that evil spirits had overpowered her," he said.

He added that they were subsequently taken to the Police Station near the Katsina Motor Park, where officers recorded their statements and documented the incident. He was later taken to hospital for medical treatment, while his wife was taken into custody for further investigation.

The Katsina State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday, June 30, 2026.

As of the time of filing this report, the police said investigations were ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident before taking appropriate legal action.
