A governorship aspirant on the platform of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Katsina State, Lawal Musa Daura, has warned that he may resort to legal action if the party fails to follow the provisions of the Electoral Act in selecting its governorship candidate for the 2027 elections.

Daura issued the warning during a meeting with his supporters convened to address reports that the party had already settled for a governorship candidate and allegedly advised him to pursue a senatorial seat instead.

He said the gathering was necessary to clear the air following widespread speculation that had generated concern among his supporters.

According to him, rumours suggesting that the ADC had concluded arrangements for its governorship ticket and assigned other political positions to some aspirants created uncertainty within his camp.

“There was confusion arising from reports that the party already had a governorship candidate and that some of us had been allocated other offices, including a senatorial seat. My supporters needed clarification on the situation,” he said.

Daura maintained that no legitimate process had produced a governorship candidate, stressing that the party must adhere strictly to the Electoral Act through either a consensus arrangement acceptable to all stakeholders or a properly conducted direct primary election.

He argued that any outcome not grounded in the procedures stipulated by law would lack credibility and acceptance.

“We have consistently maintained that the provisions of the Electoral Act must be respected. Whether through consensus or direct primaries, there must be clear evidence that the process has been followed in accordance with the law before any conclusion can be reached,” he stated.

The aspirant noted that only a transparent and lawful exercise would earn the confidence of party members and aspirants ahead of the general elections.

He urged his supporters to remain peaceful and patient while ongoing efforts to resolve the issues are pursued in collaboration with party leaders.

“My appeal is for them to remain calm, law-abiding and await the outcome of efforts being made to address the concerns and arrive at a position that is fair, just and acceptable to all parties involved,” he said.

Daura, however, indicated that the courts remained an option should the party fail to comply with legal requirements.

“If the law is not complied with, one of the available options is to seek judicial intervention to ensure compliance,” he said.

He also hinted at possible political realignments if internal efforts to resolve the matter prove unsuccessful, saying stakeholders would review their next line of action when necessary.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding the party’s nomination process, Daura reaffirmed his commitment to the governorship race, insisting that Katsina State requires purposeful leadership to confront its security and economic challenges.

He expressed confidence in his credentials and capacity to lead the state, describing his ambition as a commitment to public service and the welfare of the people.

“Katsina State faces serious security and economic challenges. We are indigenes of the state and possess the experience and capacity required to help address these problems. My aspiration is driven by a desire to serve and improve the lives of our people,” he said.

His comments come amid increasing political activities within the ADC as stakeholders intensify consultations and preparations ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle in Katsina State.
