The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has rescued a 15-year-old girl from an alleged human trafficking attempt to Libya.
The FCT NSCDC spokesperson, Monica Ojobi, disclosed this in a statement on Friday in Abuja.
She said the victim was rescued from a 46-year-old suspect who allegedly held her in Kwali for two weeks without her consent.
According to Ojobi, the rescue followed a missing person report lodged by the girl’s mother at the NSCDC Kwali command.
Preliminary investigations, she said, revealed that the victim was allegedly subjected to sexual molestation while in the suspect’s custody.
She added that further interrogation uncovered plans by the suspect to traffic the minor to Libya for child labour before he was intercepted by operatives.
The FCT Commandant of NSCDC, Dr Olusola Odumosu, assured the victim’s family that justice would be served.
“We will ensure justice is served and dismantle networks enabling such crimes. Our covert officers are gathering intelligence to guide further actions,” he said.
Odumosu disclosed that both the suspect and the victim had been handed over to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) for further investigation and possible prosecution.
He reiterated the corps’ commitment, in collaboration with other agencies, to combating human trafficking and related offences across the country.
“The arrest underscores our resolve to protect vulnerable children from exploitation and abuse. Those involved in such acts will not go unpunished,” he said.
The commandant urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements involving children to security agencies, stressing the need for stronger community collaboration to curb trafficking and other crimes.
