The leadership crisis rocking the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Katsina State has deepened, as the state chairman, Alhaji Musa Usman Wamba, accused some party members of imposing an illegal leadership structure.
In a press release issued on Saturday, Wamba said the crisis began after certain individuals allegedly interfered in the party’s ongoing leadership elections at polling unit, ward, local government and state levels, contrary to guidelines set by the national leadership.
He stated that the current state executives, under his leadership, had been in office for nearly four years and were prepared to participate in a fresh congress as their tenure nears expiration.
According to him, the dispute arose when a faction allegedly convened a parallel meeting and produced a list of about 70 party officials without including any members of the existing structure.
“This prompted us to seek redress in court to ensure justice,” he said.
Wamba further disclosed that following a court order halting the process, elders within and outside Katsina State intervened to broker peace between the factions.
He said several meetings were held in a bid to reach a compromise, adding that his group initially demanded 50 per cent of the positions, later reduced to 30 per cent, but the proposal was rejected.
He noted that after further interventions by prominent stakeholders and the party’s national leadership from Abuja, his faction agreed to accept less than 10 per cent of the positions in the interest of peace.
According to him, a draft agreement was prepared by legal representatives and was awaiting endorsement, which would have paved the way for withdrawal of the court case.
However, he alleged that the opposing group reneged on the agreement and chose to continue with the disputed process, thereby prolonging the crisis.
Wamba maintained that his faction would continue to defend internal democracy within the party and resist what he described as an attempt to hijack the structure.
He stressed that the ADC in Katsina, under his leadership, would remain committed to upholding the rule of law and the party’s constitution.
“We will not allow individuals to undermine a party we have built over nearly two decades,” he said.
He, however, appreciated the support of party members and the people of Katsina State, urging them to remain law-abiding and steadfast.
The statement was signed by Wamba, the ADC Chairman in Katsina State.
