Empowering Katsina’s Digital Future:
KVC Trains Youths to Turn Smartphones into Income-Generating Tools
By Katsina Times Youth & Digital Desk
The Katsina Vocational Training Centre (KVTC), in collaboration with the Paracha Family Abuja, has wrapped up a groundbreaking three-day intensive workshop aimed at transforming how young people view and use their mobile phones, not just as communication gadgets, but as gateways to income and self-reliance.
Held from 8th to 10th September 2025 at the Katsina State Secretariat conference hall, the programme carried the theme: “Using Mobile Phones for Skills and Income Generation.” The event drew dozens of eager young men and women seeking opportunities within Nigeria’s fast-evolving digital economy.
KVTC: Two Decades of Youth Empowerment
Founded over 20 years ago by the late educationist MD Yusuf, KVTC has become a household name in vocational and entrepreneurial training in Katsina. With centres in Kerau and other locations, KVTC has trained thousands in hands-on skills, entrepreneurship, and digital literacy.
Now, the institution is shifting its focus beyond traditional vocational crafts to digital tools helping young people compete in the 21st-century economy.
Inside the Three-Day Digital Journey
Day One: Digital Awareness
The opening day focused on broadening participants’ understanding of smartphones. Trainers demonstrated advanced functions such as secure data management, mobile navigation tools, and emergency health apps. Youths were also sensitised to cyber risks including hacking, phishing, and identity theft.
Day Two: Apps for Earning
Attention shifted on day two to income-generating mobile applications. Platforms like Spround Gigs, Eright Gick, Mine Job, and Owo Daily were introduced, showing participants how to complete simple digital tasks for payment. Facilitators, however, stressed the importance of verifying platforms to avoid scams.
Day Three: Digital Entrepreneurship
The final day was dedicated to entrepreneurial skills. Participants learned how to leverage WhatsApp Business, social media marketing, and e-commerce strategies for buying and selling. Lead trainer, Malam Mubarak from Jigawa, encouraged youths to embrace small-scale businesses as foundations for financial independence.
Voices of Encouragement
At the closing ceremony, Justice Musa Danladi Abubakar, Chief Judge of Katsina State, commended KVTC and its partners for equipping youths with 21st-century survival skills. He urged trainees to use their new knowledge responsibly and in line with moral and religious values.
Participants received certificates of completion, marking a milestone in their journey toward digital empowerment.
Beyond the Workshop: A Broader Vision
KVTC officials revealed plans to scale up the programme across Katsina and neighbouring states. Their goal is to create a new generation of tech-savvy entrepreneurs who can thrive in Nigeria’s digital economy, reduce unemployment, and contribute to broader socio-economic growth.
With initiatives like this, KVTC is not just training young people, it is laying the foundation for Katsina’s digital future.
