Kabir Sabo Katata is a quantitative energy strategist and computational finance expert with strong power trading and risk management experience. He has over twenty-eight years’ experience in the design and management of technically innovative systems in multiple industries including telecommunications, IT, energy (petroleum & power), finance and government. He is a specialist in sophisticated financial optimization, the application of modern statistical techniques and mathematics to energy, deposit insurance and banking sectors.
Kabir consulted with global organisations in the areas of financial and energy risk management and financial engineering. He also developed mobile phone demand and forecast analysis tools for Vodafone Partnership (Unipart Technology Logistics), UK. Prior to that he was a project manager with Image Technologies and a programmer, then systems analyst with Nigeria Mobile Telecomms Ltd.
Dr Katata joined the service of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation in 2012 as an Assistant Director in the Research, Policy and International Relations Department and rose to the pinnacle of his career as Director in January 2022. He had the privilege to lead and conduct independent, large-scale research projects in the Corporation. Kabir designed and developed several world-class risk forecasting, risk management and financial stability models to strengthen the effective discharge of the Corporation’s mandate. He served as NDIC representative on various interagency and international groups. He was also the Editor-in-Chief of the NDIC Quarterly, the Corporation’s scholarly Journal.
Dr Katata is the author of several research papers on financial portfolio optimization, risk management and artificial intelligence. He has presented academic and professional papers on financial risk management and deposit insurance at conferences in Nigeria and worldwide.
Kabir holds a B.Sc. Upper Second Class in Computer Science, Mathematics and Statistics from University of Abuja, Nigeria; M.Sc. with Distinction in Computer and Network Engineering from Sheffield Hallam University, UK; M.Sc. and Postgraduate Diploma in Finance from Imperial College Business School, Imperial College, London. He has a PhD in Financial Engineering and Management Science from Warwick Business School, University of Warwick, UK. His thesis was titled:” Risk Management, Portfolio Optimization and Trading in Energy & Financial Markets”.
He was appointed Executive Director (Operations) of the Nigeria Deposit Insurance on Friday 25th July 2025 following his nomination by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and subsequent confirmation by the Senate
