Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has officially resigned his membership from the People's Democratic Party (PDP), bringing an end to a long-standing political relationship that spanned decades.

In a letter dated July 14, 2025, and addressed to the Chairman of PDP in Jada 1 Ward, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku cited irreconcilable differences and a deviation from the party’s foundational values as the reasons behind his decision.

“It is with a heavy heart that I resign,” Atiku wrote. “I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”

Atiku, who served two terms as Vice President from 1999 to 2007 under the PDP platform and was the party’s presidential flagbearer on two occasions, expressed deep gratitude for the opportunities the party had given him. He described his journey in the PDP as one of the most significant chapters of his political life.

“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” the letter reads.

His resignation marks a major shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, especially considering his stature and historical role in shaping the PDP since its inception.

The letter was received and acknowledged by party officials on the same day.

While Atiku did not indicate his next political move, his departure is expected to trigger political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
