The Katsina State government has officially fixed February 15, 2025, for the state local council elections.
The Chairman of the State Electoral Council, Alhaji Lawal Alhassan Faskari, made the announcement at a press briefing in Katsina.
He said the 365 days’ notice complies with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, as amended, and urged political parties and prospective aspirants for the positions of chairmanship and councillorship of the 34 local governments to abide by all electoral laws and guidelines.
According to him, the timetable and guidelines for the election will be released by the commission in due course, calling on political parties and other stakeholders to conduct their activities in a way to ensure peaceful elections.
The tenure of the current Chairmen and Councillors of the 34 local governments will expire in April this year, and the Directors of Administration and Finance (DAF) of the local councils will be expected to take over pending the conduct of the elections.
It will be recalled that, from the inception of his administration, the state governor, Dikko Umar Radda, has uttered that he would not follow in the footsteps of his predecessor, Aminu Bello Masari, who worked with caretaker chairmen until, towards the end of his eight-year tenure, he conducted the LG elections.
