The Federal Government has released ₦38.93 billion to 166 public tertiary institutions across Nigeria to tackle infrastructure shortages and improve teaching and learning facilities.
The disbursement, announced by the Federal Ministry of Finance on Sunday, covers 79 universities, 46 polytechnics and 41 colleges of education under the Needs Assessment Revitalisation Fund.
According to the ministry’s Head of Media, Mrs Efe Ovuakporie, universities received the largest portion of the funding, with ₦28.5 billion allocated to them. Polytechnics received ₦5.8 billion, while colleges of education were allocated ₦4.7 billion.
The intervention is also intended to support the implementation of commitments agreed upon by the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) under their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).
Ovuakporie explained that the money would enable beneficiary institutions to begin new projects or continue approved ones aimed at addressing critical infrastructure deficiencies and other identified institutional needs.
However, the ministry stressed that proper coordination between relevant government agencies and the beneficiary institutions would be essential to ensure the funds deliver measurable improvements in the education sector.
The disbursement comes amid ongoing concerns about infrastructure and learning conditions in Nigeria’s public tertiary institutions, where funding remains a key factor in efforts to improve the quality of education.
Members of the public seeking information on the beneficiary institutions and their respective allocations were advised to visit the Federal Ministry of Finance’s website at www.finance.gov.ng.
