Subsidy removal: Nigerian govt to address minimum wage, other palliatives – Minister

The Federal Government has expressed its willingness to address the new National Minimum Wage and other palliatives arising from the removal of fuel subsidy.

Simon Lalong, the new Minister of Labour and Employment made the pledged during his assumption of office with the Minister of State for Labour and Employment on Monday in Abuja.

Mr Lalong said that this was imperative in order to boost the relationship with the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress, TUC.

FG to take 133m Nigerians out of poverty – Minister

The new Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr Betta Edu has expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to lift 133 million Nigerians out of poverty.

Ms Edu disclosed this when she assumed office on Monday in Abuja and held maiden meeting with the Chief Executive Officers of the agencies under the Ministry.

She assured Nigerians of her determination to ensure transparency and accountability during her tenure as Minister.

Medical, Dental Consultants Threaten Strike Over Salary Review

The Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria (MDCAN) has issued a 21-day ultimatum to the federal government to implement the upward review of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS) and other demands.

In a communique issued on Monday after its National Executive Council meeting, the association said it could “no longer guarantee the present relative industrial harmony within the public hospitals and our medical schools if the issues were not satisfactorily resolved.”

The communique was signed by the president of the association, Victor Makanjuola and the Secretary-General, Yemi Raji.

Niger: Civil war between brothers – El-Rufai warns ECOWAS against military intervention

A former governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has advised the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) not to consider military intervention in Niger Republic.

The chairperson of ECOWAS, President Bola Tinubu, had said the bloc had resolved to use force as a last resort if the Niger coup leaders do not relinquish power to the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.

After a meeting of the bloc’s defence chiefs in Accra, Ghana’s capital city, ECOWAS said on Thursday, that it had begun the activation of its standby force in Niger.

Why FCT Minister Wike may get into trouble with Tinubu – Shehu Sani

Shehu Sani, a socio-political commentator, on Tuesday, said there is high possibility the newly-inaugurated Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, will get himself into “serious political trouble” with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said while there is no doubt about Wike’s capability to deliver on his job, there is also tendency that he may land in trouble with the president “by his utterances or actions.”

The former Kaduna Central Senator said Wike must learn how to “walk in a minefield or be blown by it.”

Subsidy removal: Kaduna govt reviews school fees

The Kaduna state government has reviewed the school fees of indigenes in higher institutions in the State.

Addressing newsmen in Kaduna on Monday on “Review of current fees regime in Kaduna State tertiary institutions”, Governor Uba Sani said, “the extant fees regime in the State-owned tertiary institutions is burdensome and has led to a significant decline in student enrolments.

“The extant fees has made many students to either abandon the pursuit of tertiary education or move to alternative institutions.”

Kano guber tussle: Tribunal reserves judgment

The Kano State Election Petition Tribunal on Monday reserved judgment in a petition filed by the All Progressive Congress, APC, challenging the victory of Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP.

The APC is challenging INEC for declaring Kabir-Yusuf of the NNPP as the winner of the election that was conducted on March 18, 2023.

Respondents in the petition are: INEC, Mr Kabir-Yusuf and the NNPP.

Tinubu To Ministers: Get To Work, Nigerians Won’t Tolerate Failure 

President Bola Tinubu yesterday mandated the 45 newly inaugurated ministers of the Federal Republic to get to work immediately as Nigerians won’t tolerate any excuse for failure.

President Tinubu asked the ministers to prioritise the interests and welfare of the entire nation and its diverse population, above any regional or state-specific considerations.

The president gave the directive while speaking at the inauguration of new members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja.

NNPP Chairmen Accuse Kwankwaso Of Anti-party Activities

The forum of state chairmen of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has instituted a legal action against the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party over illegal dissolution of executive councils of the party in 10 states of the federation.

The body also accused the former party Presidential candidate of  Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwakwaso of engaging in anti-party activities which undermined the success and fortune of the party in the  2023 presidential polls.

The NNPP state chairmen who claimed that Kwakwaso was making an attempt to hijack the party structures alleged that he was using members of the NWC to perpetrate illegalities and take unconstitutional decisions.

NEMA donates relief materials to 23,000 flood victims in Niger

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), has donated relief materials to 23, 000 farmers and vulnerable persons affected by the 2022 flood in Niger state.The director general of NEMA, Alhaji Mustapha Ahmed, stated this during the flag-off of distribution exercise in Minna, weekend. Ahmed, represented by distribution supervisor, Alhaji Abubakar Yusuf, said the intervention was to support farmers affected by 2022 flood and most vulnerable persons to cushion the effect of the disaster.He said, “Recall that the sad incident of the 2022 flood disaster affected many communities across the country including Niger state. This intervention is tagged “Special National Economic and Livelihood Emergency Intervention.”He urged beneficiaries to make proper use of the items to improve their socio-economic conditions.In a message, the deputy governor of Niger state, Comrade Yakubu Garba, commended NEMA for the intervention adding that it will bring succour to the flood victims.

Nigeria’s reserve is $3.7b, not $33.8b, says JP Morgan

Global financial service firm JP Morgan has estimated Nigeria’s net foreign reserve to be around $3.7 billion.

The figure is far below the $33.8 billion as of August 17 on Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) website.

JP Morgan’s estimate is much lower than the net figure of $14 billion reported at the end of 2021.
