A civil society organisation, the Tap Initiative for Citizens Development, has unveiled a new digital platform aimed at boosting citizen participation in elections and strengthening accountability within Nigeria’s electoral process.
The platform, known as iReportINEC, was developed in partnership with the National Endowment for Democracy (NED) and the National Election Accountability Consortium (NEAC). It is designed to give Nigerians a direct channel to monitor elections, report irregularities, and contribute to efforts aimed at improving the credibility of the country's democratic system.
According to the organisation, the launch of the platform represents a significant step toward promoting transparency, civic engagement, and democratic governance by empowering citizens to play a more active role in electoral oversight.
In a statement issued by the Executive Director of the Tap Initiative for Citizens Development, Mr. Mbasekei Martin Obono, the group said iReportINEC was created to provide a secure, accessible and user-friendly space where citizens can report electoral concerns and track the implementation of electoral reforms.
Obono described the platform as an innovative civic technology tool that allows users to document and submit reports on incidents and challenges encountered throughout the electoral cycle.
He explained that citizens can use the platform to report a wide range of election-related issues, including difficulties during voter registration, irregularities on election day, breaches of campaign regulations, incidents of electoral violence, vote-buying and other practices capable of undermining the integrity of elections.
According to him, the initiative seeks to bridge the gap between citizens and electoral accountability by ensuring that concerns raised by the public are documented and brought to the attention of relevant stakeholders.
He noted that beyond reporting incidents, the platform is expected to encourage constructive citizen engagement, increase public confidence in the electoral process and support efforts to build a more transparent and responsive electoral system.
The organisation expressed optimism that the platform would serve as a valuable tool for promoting credible elections and strengthening democratic institutions by giving ordinary Nigerians a greater voice in safeguarding the country's electoral process.
With the introduction of iReportINEC, citizens are expected to play a more active role in monitoring elections and holding key actors accountable, reinforcing calls for free, fair and transparent elections across the country.
