President Bola Tinubu is expected to make his first appearance at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in two years this September, as Nigeria prepares to intensify calls for stronger international cooperation to tackle security threats across West Africa.

The President, who was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima at the last two editions of the annual global summit, will personally lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 81st session of the UN General Assembly in New York.

Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, disclosed this after a meeting with Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

According to the ambassador, the President has confirmed his attendance at the high-level gathering, where Nigeria will present key national and regional priorities before world leaders, policymakers and international development partners.

A major item on Nigeria’s agenda, Ibrahim said, will be the push for enhanced border policing and security collaboration across West Africa to curb rising insecurity, cross-border crimes and other emerging threats confronting the region.

He noted that Nigeria would use the platform to seek broader international support for initiatives aimed at strengthening regional security architecture and improving coordination among neighbouring countries.

Beyond security concerns, Ibrahim said the Nigerian delegation would engage with global stakeholders on critical sectors such as energy, education and healthcare, with the aim of attracting partnerships that can accelerate development and improve the well-being of citizens.

The envoy stressed that the UN General Assembly remains one of the world’s most influential diplomatic platforms, offering Nigeria an opportunity to deepen bilateral and multilateral relations while advancing discussions on issues of strategic importance to both the country and the African continent.

Tinubu’s planned return to the UN gathering is expected to provide Nigeria with a stronger voice on regional security, economic development and international cooperation, at a time when West Africa continues to grapple with complex security and development challenges.
