The 12-month initiative will support 18,600 people in Bakori, Bindawa and Kafur LGAs through water, agriculture, livelihood and early-warning interventions.
The Katsina State Development Management Board (KTDMB) has partnered with Mercy Corps Nigeria on a 12-month initiative aimed at strengthening the resilience of vulnerable communities to floods, drought and other climate-related shocks.
According to the Executive Chairman of KTDMB, Mustapha Shehu PhD, the initiative will directly benefit 18,600 people across 3,100 households in Bakori, Bindawa and Kafur Local Government Areas.
The programme is designed to strengthen food security, protect livelihoods and help communities prepare for and respond to climate-related risks.
Under the initiative, 12 solar-powered community water systems will be provided to improve access to reliable water, while measures will also be introduced to improve food storage and reduce post-harvest losses.
The project will further support the protection of agricultural land and productive assets from climate-related risks, while women will receive livelihood support aimed at strengthening household incomes and economic resilience.
Farmers will also receive training on adaptive farming techniques to help them respond to changing weather patterns.
Another component of the initiative is the establishment of community-based early-warning systems to enable residents to anticipate climate risks and take preventive action before disasters occur.
The KTDMB said the intervention is expected to reduce the number of vulnerable households losing livelihoods to floods and drought, while improving food security, household incomes and communities’ capacity to prepare for, respond to and recover from climate-related shocks.
The board said the approach prioritises prevention and preparedness rather than waiting for disasters to occur.
“Building resilient communities is not only about responding to emergencies. It is about protecting livelihoods, strengthening food systems and ensuring that families can continue to live despite climate-related challenges,” Shehu said.
The initiative forms part of efforts to strengthen community resilience by combining water access, agricultural adaptation, livelihood support and early-warning mechanisms in areas vulnerable to climate-related shocks.
