Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani has said governors in northern Nigeria now have sufficient financial resources to tackle insecurity following increased federal allocations under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
Sani made the remarks while speaking on TVC News’ This Morning programme on Wednesday.
He attributed the increase in allocations to the removal of the fuel subsidy, saying the additional revenue accruing to state governments should be invested in security, education, healthcare and infrastructure.
According to him, governors are among the major beneficiaries of the economic reforms and should demonstrate how the increased funds are being utilised.
Sani acknowledged that the government’s reforms had resulted in some visible projects and that security operations had led to the reopening of some areas previously affected by banditry and terrorism for farming and schooling.
However, he said insecurity remained one of the biggest challenges facing the Tinubu administration ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“Bandits in the Northwest and terrorists in the Northeast are still unleashing mayhem,” he said.
Sani said significant improvements in security would increase public confidence in the government and strengthen the APC’s chances in 2027.
He also urged political actors to defend government policies with verifiable achievements rather than propaganda.
