The Sultanate Council in Sokoto has urged Muslims across Nigeria to observe the sky on Thursday for the sighting of the crescent moon that will mark the beginning of Rabi’ul Awwal 1448AH, one of the most revered months in the Islamic calendar.
The appeal was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday and signed by the Wazirin Sokoto and Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Prof. Sambo Wali Junaidu.
According to the council, Thursday, August 13, 2026, corresponding to the 29th day of Safar 1448AH, has been set aside for the nationwide moon-sighting exercise to determine the commencement of the new Islamic month.
The council called on Muslims who successfully sight the crescent to promptly relay the information through their nearest District or Village Heads for onward transmission to the Sultan of Sokoto and President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), His Eminence, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar.
Rabi’ul Awwal occupies a special place in Islamic history and tradition, as it is widely associated with the birth of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The 12th day of the month is traditionally commemorated by many Muslims through activities that reflect the life, teachings and legacy of the Prophet.
Across several communities, the period is usually marked by Maulud celebrations, Islamic lectures, Qur’anic recitations, devotional gatherings, praises of the Prophet and other religious activities aimed at deepening faith and spiritual reflection.
The Sultanate Council expressed optimism over a successful moon-sighting exercise and prayed for divine guidance and blessings for Muslims as they prepare to usher in the new month.
It also sought Allah’s assistance for the faithful in carrying out the religious obligation, while wishing the Muslim Ummah a peaceful and spiritually rewarding Rabi’ul Awwal 1448AH.
