NUJ Katsina Screens Online Media Organisations for New Online Chapel Membership

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Katsina State Council, has commenced the screening of online media organisations and qualified digital journalists for admission into its newly established Online Chapel, in a move aimed at strengthening professionalism and accountability in digital journalism.

The screening exercise was conducted on Sunday, August 2, 2026, under the leadership of the Chairman of the NUJ Katsina State Council, Comrade Aminu Garba Dandagoro. The exercise sought to assess online media organisations and individuals seeking membership of the union in line with its constitutional requirements.

Among the media organisations successfully screened were Taskar Labarai, established in 2015, Katsina City News, founded in 2018, and Katsina Times, alongside several other digital news platforms operating within and outside Katsina State.

Speaking after the screening, the Online Editor and Correspondent of Katsina Times, Zaharaddeen Ishaq Abubakar, commended the NUJ for establishing the Online Chapel, describing it as a significant step towards promoting ethical journalism and improving professional standards among online media practitioners.

He said the initiative would help sanitise the digital media space by ensuring that only credible and professionally managed online news organisations are recognised by the union, while also providing a structured framework for self-regulation and adherence to the ethics of journalism.

Abubakar urged other eligible online media organisations to embrace the initiative and work collectively towards advancing responsible journalism, stressing that unity among practitioners would contribute to the growth and credibility of the profession.

He also encouraged media organisations that did not meet the membership requirements to identify the deficiencies in their applications, address them, and reapply in order to qualify for future admission into the union.

During the screening exercise, representatives of the media organisations presented relevant documents, including academic qualifications, certificates of incorporation issued by the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), and other supporting documents required by the NUJ for membership verification.

Other online media organisations that successfully completed the screening included Katsina Post, Mobile Media Crew, Hikaya TV, and several other digital news platforms.

The establishment of the Online Chapel is widely regarded as a major milestone for the NUJ in Katsina State, reflecting the growing importance of digital journalism and the union's commitment to promoting professionalism, ethical standards, and institutional recognition for online media practitioners.
