More than 30 bodies believed to be those of armed bandits have been discovered in farmlands around Bukuyum town in Zamfara State after security operatives repelled an attempted attack on the community.

The Zamfara State Police Command said its personnel, working alongside local civil security groups, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle, preventing them from advancing into the town.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, the command said the bodies were later found in surrounding farmlands following the confrontation.

However, the police cautioned that the reported casualties had yet to be independently verified, noting that bandits often remove their dead and injured from battle scenes. The discovery of the bodies, it said, could therefore represent only part of the losses suffered by the attackers.

The command said the successful defence of Bukuyum prevented possible deaths, destruction of property and further displacement of residents.

It also disclosed that preliminary security assessments suggested sustained pressure from military and other security operations had forced some bandit groups to leave the state.

The police vowed to continue clearance operations in collaboration with other security agencies and relevant stakeholders, saying the efforts were aimed at eliminating criminal elements, restoring public confidence and protecting communities across the affected areas.
