Efforts to deepen cooperation between Katsina State and international development partners took center stage at a high-level meeting held at the Katsina State Secretariat, where officials of the UK-supported SPRING Programme met with the Secretary to the Government of the state (SGS), Barista Abdullahi Garba Faskari, who represented Governor Dikko Umar Radda.
The meeting brought together members of the SPRING Team, led by Dr. Ukoha Ukiwo, and senior state officials to discuss areas of mutual interest aimed at promoting peace, economic growth and sustainable development across the state. Both sides used the opportunity to introduce their teams and reaffirm their commitment to strengthening existing partnerships.
A major focus of the discussion was the security situation in Katsina State. Dr. Faskari highlighted the progress made by the state government in improving security through initiatives such as the Peace and Security Trust Fund, community rehabilitation programmes and increased engagement with local governments and affected communities. He noted that these efforts were helping to restore stability and create an environment conducive to development.
The state government also outlined ongoing efforts to attract investment and stimulate economic activities. These include the establishment of an investment promotion agency, the development of a dry port in Funtua to boost trade and logistics, and plans for an economic zone designed to attract businesses and create employment opportunities for residents.
Agriculture, a key sector of the state's economy, featured prominently in the discussions. The SSG explained that the government has invested in mechanisation centres, distributed solar-powered agricultural equipment and recruited extension workers to improve productivity and provide farmers with modern farming support services.
The meeting further reviewed preparations for upcoming elections, with officials emphasizing the importance of maintaining a peaceful political atmosphere. Discussions also explored how international development partners, including the United Kingdom, the African Development Bank and the World Bank, can better coordinate their interventions to maximize impact in Katsina State.
Speaking on behalf of the SPRING Team, Dr. Ukiwo underscored the importance of collaboration in addressing development challenges, while the state government expressed appreciation for the support received through the programme and other international initiatives. Both parties agreed on the need for continued partnership in advancing security, investment and development goals across Katsina State.
