Fresh controversy has erupted over the detention of National President of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, Bello Bodejo, after operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) reportedly re-arrested him shortly after his release from the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The development has sparked outrage among family members and supporters of the embattled Miyetti Allah leader, who described the latest action as a violation of due process and the rule of law.
Bodejo is currently facing trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of money laundering involving approximately $2.63 million. He was arraigned by the EFCC on July 9 on multiple counts bordering on the alleged offence and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
On July 20, the court granted him bail in the sum of ₦2 billion. However, despite securing the bail order, he remained in detention until his legal team successfully fulfilled all conditions attached to his release earlier this week.
According to family members, expectations of his freedom were dashed on Friday when DSS operatives allegedly intercepted and took him into custody immediately after he was released by the anti-graft agency.
Narrating the incident, Bodejo’s wife, Hajiya Hauwa Bodejo, said security personnel believed to be DSS operatives had positioned themselves around the entrance of the EFCC headquarters in Abuja for several hours before carrying out the arrest.
She explained that the EFCC had notified Bodejo’s lawyers on Thursday night to come for his release following the completion of his bail process.
According to her, arrangements were made for the release on Friday, and the family arrived at the EFCC headquarters to receive him.
“The EFCC had already brought him out of detention and was waiting for us to complete the release process,” she said.
“But as we were leaving the premises, officials of the DSS, who had been stationed around the gate, suddenly moved towards him and took him away in three vehicles.”
Hauwa described the development as shocking and distressing for the family, particularly given what she said was her husband's worsening health condition during his detention.
She alleged that Bodejo’s personal physician had repeatedly been denied access to him since his arrest several months ago and expressed concern about his wellbeing.
The family called for justice and transparency in the handling of the case, insisting that all legal processes should be respected.
As of the time of filing this report, the Department of State Services had not issued an official statement explaining the reasons behind the fresh arrest.
Efforts to obtain the agency’s reaction were unsuccessful, as inquiries sent to its official communication channels had yet to receive a response.
Meanwhile, a source within the EFCC confirmed that Bodejo was released from the commission’s custody after successfully meeting all the conditions attached to his court-approved bail.
The latest development adds a new twist to the legal troubles facing the Miyetti Allah leader and raises fresh questions about the circumstances surrounding his continued detention despite obtaining bail from the court.
