Ex-DSS boss, ADC governorship aspirant says political leadership must tackle insecurity

Former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS) and Katsina State governorship aspirant, Lawal Musa Daura, has said insecurity has reached a level where residents no longer feel safe in their homes, on highways or while travelling between communities.

Daura spoke in an interview with journalists, including a correspondent of Katsina Times, at his residence in Katsina shortly after his defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Allied Peoples Movement (APM).

He said insecurity had severely affected the socio-economic life of the people and created widespread despair and uncertainty.

“Today, nowhere is safe,” Daura said, stressing that the perpetrators of insecurity had demonstrated that no location could be taken for granted.

According to him, the situation requires a proper diagnosis of the causes of insecurity before effective solutions can be implemented.

He said a future governor must determine whether the worsening security situation was caused by failure to implement necessary measures, inadequate resources, poor application of available resources, failure to utilise intelligence from security agencies or incompetence in political leadership.

Daura, who has extensive experience in the intelligence community, said he had the capacity to understand and diagnose the security challenges confronting the state and determine what needed to be done.

“If the chance is given, Nigerians will witness positive change,” he said.

The former DSS director-general also called on citizens to put national interest above personal interests, urging Nigerians to adopt the principle of “Nigeria First.”

He said prioritising the country in individual and political decisions would strengthen patriotism and promote a stronger sense of national responsibility.

Daura urged citizens to consider both personal and national benefits before taking decisions, arguing that actions that serve only individual interests at the expense of the country should be reconsidered.

He said insecurity could not be addressed by government alone without responsible participation from citizens and effective political leadership.
