Residents of Unguwar Bako village in Kankara Local Government Area of Katsina State have been thrown into mourning following the killing of a young phone charging shop operator and his mother during an attack by armed assailants.

The incident, which occurred in the rural community, was first brought to public attention through a post on social media platform X by user @iambabangida.

According to the account, the attackers stormed a phone charging business operated by the young man and demanded that he hand over several mobile phones belonging to customers who had left them in his care for charging.

The victim was said to have declined the demand, explaining that the devices did not belong to him and had been entrusted to him by their owners. He reportedly insisted that he could not surrender the phones.

Witness accounts circulating online alleged that the assailants responded by shooting the young man dead at the scene.

The situation reportedly turned more tragic moments later when his mother rushed out of their home after hearing gunshots. She was said to have been confronted by the attackers and fatally shot while trying to find out what had happened to her son.

The killings have sparked outrage and renewed concerns over security challenges in Kankara and other parts of Katsina State, where communities have faced recurring attacks by armed criminal groups in recent years.

However, a local government official, Ibrahim Sulaiman, who confirmed the incident, disputed claims that bandits were responsible for the attack. According to him, the perpetrators were armed robbers rather than bandits.

The circumstances surrounding the attack remain unclear, with residents calling for a thorough investigation and enhanced security measures to protect vulnerable communities.

As of the time of filing this report, the Katsina State Police Command had yet to issue an official statement on the incident. Authorities are also yet to provide details on possible arrests or ongoing efforts to track down those responsible for the killings.
