The Chief Magistrates’ Court in Katsina has granted bail to renowned security analyst and public affairs commentator, Dr. Bashir Kurfi, following his arraignment over allegations of defamation and related offences.

Dr. Kurfi, who was arrested by the police and charged last week, pleaded not guilty to the allegations brought against him.

Speaking to journalists after Monday’s proceedings, counsel to the defendant, Barrister A.D. Umar, expressed satisfaction with the court’s decision, describing the hearing as fair, orderly and conducted without controversy.

According to him, the court acted appropriately in granting bail, considering the nature of the charges filed against his client.

“We had a smooth court session and, in fact, everything went well. The court has done what is right by granting him bail, considering the nature of the allegations against him,” Umar said.

The defence lawyer noted that both parties in the case were pleased with the manner in which the proceedings were handled.

“We are all satisfied. Not only him, even the prosecution is satisfied,” he added.

Umar disclosed that the court approved Dr. Kurfi’s bail application on the condition that he provides two reliable sureties who are residents of Katsina State and can present proof of ownership of landed property.

He explained that each surety is required to enter into a N500,000 bail bond, which would be forfeited should the defendant fail to appear before the court when required.

The defence counsel also assured the court that Dr. Kurfi would comply fully with the bail conditions and attend all scheduled hearings until the matter is concluded.

The case has been adjourned to August 13, 2026, for the continuation of hearing as the court begins substantive consideration of the allegations.

The development marks a significant step in the legal proceedings involving the security commentator, whose arrest and prosecution have attracted public attention in Katsina and beyond. As the trial progresses, the court is expected to hear evidence from both the prosecution and the defence before reaching a determination on the allegations.
