The Federal Government says it will extend trusted digital identity coverage to nearly 80 million learners across Nigeria as part of efforts to strengthen identity management and improve service delivery in the education sector.

The commitment was reaffirmed on Friday during a meeting between the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Bisoye Coker-Odusote.

A statement by the Director of Press and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Boriowo Folasade, said the partnership aims to deepen collaboration between the ministry and NIMC to build a secure and trusted digital identity ecosystem.

Alausa described the NIMC Act 2026 as a landmark reform that would strengthen governance, improve public service delivery and enhance confidence in Nigeria's digital identity system.

He said the ministry had integrated the National Learners' Identification Number (LIN) with the National Identification Number (NIN) through the Nigeria Education Management Information System (NEMIS).

According to him, the integration will provide verified education data to support planning, ensure equitable allocation of resources and improve learning outcomes across the country.

The minister noted that Nigeria's education sector serves nearly 80 million learners at all levels of education.

On her part, the NIMC Director-General said more than 120 million Nigerians had been enrolled in the National Identity Database, adding that digital identity services were continuing to expand nationwide.

The ministry reiterated its commitment to working with NIMC to strengthen secure digital identity, improve education service delivery and support national development.
