Katsina State Governor, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, has flagged off the distribution of appointment letters to 2,158 newly recruited teachers for the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education and the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), describing the exercise as another milestone in his administration's determination to rebuild the education sector.

Speaking during the ceremony in Katsina, Governor Radda said the recruitment followed a rigorous, transparent and merit-based process designed to ensure that qualified teachers are deployed to schools where they are most needed.

He said the exercise aligns with his administration's development agenda of "Building Your Future" through sustained investment in human capital.

"Today marks another important milestone in our administration's unwavering commitment to rebuilding and repositioning the education sector in Katsina State. It reflects our determination to fulfil the promise of our development agenda by investing in our people and equipping our young generation with quality education," the governor said.

Governor Radda described education as the most powerful instrument for societal transformation, stressing that investment in education remains a strategic investment in the future of Katsina State.

The governor recalled that his administration recruited and deployed 7,323 teachers in 2023, alongside the employment of over 1,800 healthcare personnel across primary and secondary healthcare facilities this year.

According to him, the present recruitment is another decisive step towards strengthening human capital development and guaranteeing access to quality education for every child in the state.

Governor Radda highlighted several interventions undertaken by his administration in the education sector, including the construction of more than 49 junior and senior secondary schools, establishment of three Special Smart Schools, rehabilitation of over 340 primary schools, provision of instructional materials, payment of public examination fees, teacher training programmes and digital learning initiatives.

He disclosed that over 25,000 teachers have received training, while government introduced a ₦30,000 rural teachers' allowance, distributed 18,000 digital tablets, procured electronic motorcycles for teachers in hard-to-reach communities and established the Centre for Teacher Development and Training.

Governor Radda further noted that, for the first time in the state's history, teacher recruitment was conducted based on the staffing requirements of individual schools and subject needs.

"The recruitment exercise was deliberately designed to be transparent, merit-based and inclusive. For the first time in the history of our State, teacher recruitment was conducted based on the actual staffing needs of individual schools and subject requirements," he stated.

The governor congratulated the successful applicants and urged them to justify the confidence reposed in them through dedication, professionalism and integrity.

"Your selection is both an honour and a responsibility. You are expected to serve as mentors, role models and nation builders who will shape the minds and character of the future leaders of Katsina State," he said.

Governor Radda also directed the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education to work with the Centre for Teacher Development and Training and the recruitment committee to organise a comprehensive induction programme for all newly recruited teachers.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Hon. Yusuf Suleiman Jibia, described the recruitment exercise as another demonstration of Governor Radda's commitment to transparent governance and education development.

He disclosed that more than 64,598 applicants applied for the exercise, out of which 8,889 candidates were shortlisted after screening, while 3,683 passed the Computer-Based Test and progressed to the oral interview stage before the final selection of 2,158 teachers.

"The recruitment was entirely merit-based. No public office holder interfered in the process, while deployment was based on the staffing requirements of schools and subject specialisation," the commissioner said.

He added that over 9,000 teachers have been recruited by the Radda administration since 2023, describing it as the highest teacher recruitment exercise since the creation of Katsina State.

In his vote of thanks, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, Dr. Kabir Magaji, commended Governor Radda for prioritising education through massive investments in teacher recruitment, school infrastructure, capacity building and learning materials.

"The recruitment of 2,158 competent teachers will improve teacher-pupil ratios, enhance classroom instruction and contribute significantly to raising educational standards across Katsina State," he said.

Speaking on behalf of the newly recruited teachers, Ashiru Nura said he had no prior connection to anyone in government before he got the appointment. He expressed gratitude to the Governor for creating the opportunity and assured him that the new teachers would follow his guidance closely.

Nura also urged his colleagues to remain committed and transparent in their work. He called on all newly employed teachers to show dedication and honesty in carrying out their responsibilities to the education sector.

The ceremony was attended by the Speaker of the Katsina State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Nasir Yahaya Daura; Chief of Staff to the Governor, Hon. Abdulkadir Mamman Nasir; the Grand Khadi of Katsina State, Prof. Mohammed Kabir; members of the State Executive Council; Chairman of the Teachers Service Board, Alhaji Sada Mohammed Sada; the Governor's Special Adviser on Public Service Reforms and Chairman Teachers’ Recruitment Committee, Alhaji Isiyaku Usman; Katsina TESS Project Coordinator, Hajia Binta Abdulmumini;  and other senior government officials and stakeholders in the education sector.
