Nigeria’s music history would be difficult to tell without mentioning the name King Sunny Ade.
For decades, the legendary juju musician has remained one of the most recognisable figures in the country’s entertainment industry, taking a distinctly Nigerian sound from local stages to audiences around the world.
As the music icon, born Sunday Adeniyi Adegeye, turned 80, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu joined a long list of Nigerians celebrating the man whose career has stretched across generations.
In a birthday message personally signed by the President on Tuesday, Tinubu described King Sunny Ade as much more than an entertainer, portraying him as a cultural ambassador whose music helped introduce Nigeria’s traditions and artistic identity to the wider world.
The President said the musician’s eight-decade journey represented a remarkable combination of creativity, discipline and persistence, qualities that enabled him to build a career that has remained relevant for generations.
For Tinubu, one of King Sunny Ade’s greatest achievements was the transformation of juju music into a sound capable of commanding attention far beyond Nigeria. Tinubu said cultural icons such as Sunny Ade demonstrate how Nigerian creativity can become a form of national heritage, carrying the country’s identity across borders and creating connections with people who may know little about Nigeria beyond its music and arts.
The President described the musician’s 80th birthday as an important milestone and used the occasion to acknowledge the years of work behind the legend.
