The Katsina State Police Command has foiled two suspected bandit attacks in Funtua and Musawa Local Government Areas, rescued a kidnapped woman and recovered 15 rustled cattle.
The command said the operations were carried out following intelligence reports and distress calls received by its operatives.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abubakar Sadiq Aliyu, officers attached to the Central Police Station, Funtua, acted on credible intelligence at about 2:00 a.m. on Sunday that suspected armed bandits were moving rustled cattle across the border between Funtua and Dandume Local Government Areas.
He said the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) led a team of operatives to the area, where they engaged the suspects in a gun battle.
"The operatives responded with superior firepower, forcing the bandits to flee into a nearby forest," the police spokesman said.
Aliyu added that a kidnapped woman, identified as Hafiza Rabiu, was rescued unharmed during the operation, while seven rustled cows were recovered. He said the victim had been medically examined and reunited with her family.
In a related development, the command said police operatives in collaboration with members of the Katsina State Community Watch Corps (KSCWC) recovered eight additional rustled cows after repelling another bandit attack in Kuru Village, Musawa Local Government Area.
The incident, according to the command, occurred on July 17 after suspected armed bandits invaded the village and rustled cattle.
The police said officers tracked the suspects into a nearby bush, where an exchange of gunfire ensued. The attackers reportedly abandoned the cattle and fled.
The command said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
Commissioner of Police, Ali Umar Fage, commended the officers involved for their bravery and professionalism and urged residents to continue providing timely and credible information to support security agencies in combating crime across the state.
